We have quite an adventure ahead of us this year, so let’s jump right in as a team! There is lots to learn and lots of fun to be had along the way.

Our Topic is 'Childhood'

This half term we are learning about everyday life and families in our community today, this will include exploration of our own family trees, timelines and important events.

The children will be comparing their own experiences today with childhood in the 1950’s.

This topic has a historical focus and we are excited for all of the learning opportunities it will bring.

In English we are reading the well-loved classic story of ‘Dogger’, with opportunities to for the children to practice their story writing. We will also be exploring more of Shirley Hughes’ writing through her poetry in ‘Out and About’.

This half term we are continuing with the phonics scheme ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds’. We are continuing to learn the Phase 5 Graphemes and tricky words.

Please visit the Little Wandle website and head to the ‘For Parents’ section, if you would like to see our current way of teaching phonics -

In Maths the children will learn about position and direction in geometry, place value within 100, and measurement of time and money.

We will be sending home weekly spellings for your children to practise.

There will also be a written English task, along with online Mathletics tasks.

Please look in the front of your child’s homework book to find their Mathletics login.

There will be a weekly book change on Wednesday. Your child will be given two books to take home for that week. Please read with your child as often as you can, ideally every night and make note of this in their Reading Record. Encourage them to talk about the story and answer questions. It is also helpful to re-read the book.

Reading plays such an important role in our learning and we hope to encourage a love for reading and stories in Year 1.

In year 1, we have Swimming on Tuesday and PE on Thursday. Please come to school wearing your PE kit on these days, dressed appropriately for the weather. Swimming kit should be brought in in a named bag on Tuesdays. Earrings should not be worn during PE. Please either remove them before school or ensure that your child is able to remove them independently before the lesson. We also take part in the Daily Mile.
