Music
The universal language of music drives our Music curriculum. We aim to give every child an inspiring and engaging experience that sets them on a lifelong love of music. Our curriculum gives children opportunities to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music from around the world, from different periods of history and in different styles and genres. The process of how music is created, produced, and communicated through their voices, instruments and technology is developed as each year progresses. Children are given the opportunity to express their own creativity using their developing skills in a variety of different scenarios and allowing them to move on to the next level of musical excellence.
We are lucky to have Surrey Arts provide Tuning up lessons to teach a variety of instruments throughout the school. Our Choir also attends Young Voices which we attended last year at The 02 in London and this year we are travelling to Wembley Stadium.
At St Lawrence Primary our intent is:
- To teach music coherently and progressively across the school.
- To teach pupils to perform, review, analyse and evaluate music from different historical periods, genres, styles and traditions.
- To teach pupils to read music notation and to understand its advancements throughout different historical periods.
- To encourage live music within the school; promoting school choir, instrumental lessons and performance assemblies.
Implementation:
In order to ensure that all musical skills are covered and developed throughout our pupils’ time at school, we are now teaching music using a combination of schemes. In the Autumn term, we will be teaching music following the Charanga and Cornerstones music schemes. In the Spring and Summer terms pupils will be applying the practical skills of music by learning an instrument alongside Cornerstones Music lessons. In years 2 and 3, pupils will be taught recorder, and years 4, 5 and 6 will be taught to play ukulele using the Rock School Ukulele Method (including reading music on the staff and tab). We have also incorporated singing back into whole-school assemblies.
Impact
We aim to have a clear progression of aural and practical musical skills evident across both key stages. In EYFS and Key Stage 1, pupils will learn to use their voices expressively, listen attentively to a range of music and experiment with different sounds using tuned and untuned instruments.
Pupils in Key Stage 2 will learn to play and perform using their voices and musical instruments, begin to improvise and compose their own music, apply aural skills when listening to live and recorded music, use and understand staff and tab notations and begin to develop an understanding of the history of music from different traditions, composers and musicians.
Music in Early Years
The subject of music is taught under Expressive Arts and Design. Pupils listen to different types of music and learn how to move their bodies in response to how the melody and beat make them feel. EYFS pupils are encouraged to sing and dance daily, including nursery rhymes and the Days of the Week Song. In addition, there is a nursery rhyme box available in the classroom throughout the day to share different nursery rhymes and songs.
